Third day they started abusing me: Dinesh Karthik reveals he was abused over delayed ‘weather updates’

Senior Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik started a new stint as a commentator during the World Test Championship (WTC) final between India and New Zealand recently. Karthik, who was in England to commentate on the match, also became the ‘weatherman’ for cricket fans – who constantly asked him for weather updates.

While it all started on a good note with Karthik giving himself the title of the weatherman, he has now revealed that he was abused by the fans for not giving weather updates when they asked him to.

“Weatherman” is a very double-edged sword; I’ll put it on record. The first day, a lot of praise, the second day, very happy, the third day they started abusing me. I wanted to sleep; I can’t wake up every day at 6’o clock to give a weather report,” Karthik said on Gaurav Kapoor’s podcast ’22 Yarns with Gaurav Kapur’.

After the first day was washed out due to rain, Karthik posted a picture of the ground at 6 am the next day to give the fans an update about the weather conditions. Karthik went on to add how he was abused for not waking up to give the updates and also when he shared that the weather in Southampton wasn’t great.

“They took it too seriously on social media. They started abusing me saying, ‘Wake up! What the hell are you doing?’ in far more choice words that I can’t use on the podcast, just for not waking up, which was hard but you have to live up to their expectations, I guess. I got abused for saying it was raining.”

Karthik received thousands of abuses from random people – who asked him to wake up and give them weather update.

“Two things I got abused for were for saying it’s gray and it’s raining and the fact that I couldn’t wake up early to give the news. And a lot of it, I am talking about thousands of abuses. Not one or two, that I would have let go. Thousands saying ‘Wake up, wake the hell up’,” Karthik revealed.

As far as his commentary stint was concerned, Karthik was lauded by several fans and cricket pundits for his maiden commentary stint.
