The Sabarmati Report Box Office Collection: Vikrant Massey’s Film Fails to Mint Money Despite Its Tax-Free Status in Several States

The Sabarmati Report, released in theaters last week, has seen stability in box office collections, but the numbers aren’t impressive. By the end of Day 6 (Thursday), Dheeraj Sarna’s directorial venture collected Rs 1.5 crore, taking the overall total to Rs 10.35 crore.

The film based on 2002 Godhra Train Carnage incident received support from several influential politicians including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. This led to several states removing tax from the movie ticket. First to so was Chhattisgarh, followed by Madhya Pradesh. Later, Haryana minister Nayab Singh Saini also announced that The Sabarmati Report will be tax-free in their state. And now, Rajasthan has joined the bandwagon to declare the film tax-free and attract more footfall.

The Sabarmati Report opened on a decent note and collected Rs 1.2 Crore. Word of mouth helped the controversial project get people’s attention, and therefore, on day 2, it minted almost double the money- Rs 2.1 Crore. On Day 3, the collected rose to Rs 3 Crore. However, just when people felt that the film has potential to be a hit, it started dropping badly. On Day 4, it collected Rs 1.15 crore, and on day 5 Rs 1.15 crore only.

The Sabarmati Report: Controversies

Besides the promotion by leading politicians of the country, what helped the film get good attention was the controversy surrounding its lead actor Vikrant Massey. During the trailer launch of the film on November 8, Vikrant revealed that he had received several threats related to his involvement in the project. Since the film talks about the much-controversial Godhra train burning incident, many did not want a film to be made on the subject. Due to several reasons like these, the film’s release was delayed multiple times.

The Sabarmati Report also features Raashii Khanna, Riddhi Dogra, Barkha Singh, Sundip Ved in crucial roles. It has been produced under Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Motion Pictures along with Vikir Films Production and Vipin Agnihotri Films.
