What happens when India’s most loved cricketer meets one of India’s biggest movie stars? Well, it creates a hysterical stir around them that eventually reaches us through the trickling waters of the internet.
MS Dhoni, fondly referred to as ‘Thala’ by the yellow army of his fans in Tamil Nadu, set the social media sirens abuzz when he visited Thalapathy Vijay at Gokulam studios in Chennai recently.
While there is no comparison between the two mega icons’ popularity in the public eye, it can be said that whenever these two have crossed paths, the entire state goes into a fan frenzy of cult-like proportions.
As it happened, actor Vijay resumed the second schedule of his film ‘Beast’ starring Pooja Hegde opposite him in Chennai when Dhoni, too, was shooting for a few tv commercials ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 that is slated to commence in the UAE on September 19.
Upon knowing that the two were in the same studios, their managers decided to make the stars meet in person without any further ado. So, they did and spent quality time while they were at it in the state’s capital city.
Before this public encounter, they were closely associated as under the Chennai Super Kings IPL franchise unveiling event in 2008 when the CSK family umbrella extended its arms to Vijay and Nayanthara as the brand ambassadors of the team led by captain cool MSD.
Following their appearance together, netizens set social media on fire as fans of both the superstar celebrities flexed their respective soft power on the internet by sharing their pictures left, right, and center.
In case you were living under a rock, Tamil Nadu fans consider it a sign of welcoming somebody as their own once they dedicate a title to a famed public figure. So, whether it be cricket or movies, Chennai’s reception stays forever larger than life. Absolutely fitting to the Vijay-Dhoni ensemble.
‘Thala’ means leader and ‘Thalapathy’ means commander in Tamil. That’s how skipper Dhoni earned the alias on the back of dominating the cricket field for over a decade while Vijay has been the box-office king of the ever-so-growing Tamil film industry – Kollywood. Thus, he commands the masses at will.
