At least 27 people, including nine men and 18 women, were killed and 63 others were injured after a massive fire broke out at a bar in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, in the early hours of Monday, according to Thai authorities. Twenty-two of the 63 injured individuals are reported to be in a serious condition. Officials said many victims died while trying to escape through the pub’s bathroom. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by authorities.

Fire breaks out at popular Bangkok venue

According to the Jerusalem Post, the fire broke out at one of the most popular entertainment venues in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district in the early hours of Monday.

According to eyewitnesses and rescue workers, the fire broke out shortly before midnight at Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao pub in Chatuchak district. Videos that went viral on social media showed flames coming from the pub’s main entrance, with people inside the venue running for safety.

Victims died during escape attempt

Authorities said many of the victims were trying to escape through the pub’s bathroom when the fire spread through the building. The incident left at least 27 people dead. Several others suffered injuries and received medical attention, as per local media report.

According to reports, many people hid in the pub’s toilets to escape the fire. Most of the victims are believed to be among those whose bodies were found inside the toilets.

Several fire brigade teams reached the scene and worked to control the blaze. Local authorities said it took around 35 minutes to bring the fire under control. Firefighters used water jets for about 30 minutes to stop the fire from spreading.

Thai Prime Minister visits the scene

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited the site after the incident. Prime Minister Charnvirakul confirmed that 27 people had lost their lives and said several others were injured in the fire.

“The cause of the fire remains under investigation.”

Investigation underway

Police and forensic teams have launched an investigation to determine what caused the fire. Officials are examining how the blaze spread so quickly and whether the pub had proper fire safety measures in place.

Officials have not yet released further details. More information is expected as investigators continue their work and gather evidence from the scene.

Thailand’s history of deadly fire incidents

The incident has raised fresh concerns about fire safety at entertainment venues in Thailand. In 2022, a fire at a music pub in eastern Thailand killed 14 people.

The country’s deadliest nightclub fire took place in 2009 at the Santika nightclub in Bangkok. The fire was caused by indoor fireworks during New Year’s celebrations. The incident killed 66 people and injured more than 200 others
