Supreme Court Denies Bail To Former Karnataka MP Prajwal Revanna In Rape Case

The Supreme Court has denied bail to former Janata Dal (Secular) MP Prajwal Revanna, who is facing charges of multiple sexual assaults.

The allegations against Revanna emerged in April 2024, just days before the second phase of the Karnataka Lok Sabha elections, after explicit videos allegedly involving him began circulating in his constituency.

Charges Under the Indian Penal Code

Revanna sought bail for charges under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 376 (rape), along with counts of sexual harassment and voyeurism. Although Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi argued that Section 376 wasn’t initially cited, the Supreme Court bench, led by Justices Bela M. Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma, cited the gravity of the allegations in denying bail.

Previous High Court Bail Denial

This decision follows the Karnataka High Court’s earlier denial of Revanna’s bail request in October 2024, reinforcing the severity of the allegations against the former MP.

Revanna’s Arrest and Interpol Involvement

Revanna, 33, was arrested by Karnataka Police at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport on May 31, returning from Germany. A “Blue Corner Notice” was issued by Interpol following his departure just after his constituency went to polls.

Revanna is currently booked in three cases of sexual assault and related charges. Following the circulation of explicit videos, JD(S) suspended him from the party in April 2024. The legal proceedings continue as investigations unfold in Karnataka.
