The Supreme Court  asked the administration to maintain peace and harmony in Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh. While hearing the petition on Sambhal Mosque row, Supreme Court ordered Uttar Pradesh government to ensure peace and harmony is maintained in Sambhal.

“We will keep it pending. But please see that peace and harmony is maintained. We have to be absolutely neutral,” said the apex court.

In a big development, Supreme Court also ordered the trial court to not proceed with the case till the Shahi Idgah committee of Sambhal mosque moves the High Court.

Supreme Court said, “We are not going into merits. We don’t want anything to happen in meanwhile…petitioners have right to challenge the order.”

The Apex Court further ordered the advocate commissioners’ survey report to be kept in sealed cover.

Supreme Court has kept the case pending before it and posted the matter for hearing in the week commencing from January 6, 2025.

“Till the matter is listed before HC, any further proceedings will be in terms of the order passed. We have not expressed any opinion on merits of matter. Re-list in week commencing 6 January. Parties may move application if required,” the apex Court stated.

Notably, the Committee of Management of Jama Masjid in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, had moved the Supreme Court against the November 19 order of the local court for the survey of the mosque. The Chief Justice of India, Justice Sanjiv Khanna-led bench was hearing the petition of the Sambhal Jama Masjid on Friday.

On the Sambhal dispute case, Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain representing the Hindu side said,” SC has asked the mosque committee to approach the High Court. The court also said that till they approach the High Court and the matter is listed, the trial court proceedings will remain stayed.”
