‘Strengthening A Bowler…’ Ashish Kaushik Offers Suggestions As Workload Worries Resurface For Jasprit Bumrah

There has been much talk about Jasprit Bumrah before India play a five-match Test series against England. In an Indian squad absence of players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Bumrah is among the senior players in the team but chief selector Ajit Agarkar clarified that he is not expected to feature in all the five matches in the series. The management of workload has become a massive issue in regard to Bumrah after the back injury sustained in the series against Australia. The former head physiotherapist of National Cricket Academy Ashish Kaushik had a somewhat different suggestion to offer to BCCI and the team management.

Ashish Kaushik’s Statement

“Strengthening a bowler enough to take the load of bowling is crucial. They will need to train and strengthen up, spend enough time on the ground and run enough in the form of conditioning programs and ensure the bodies can return in second and third spells and deliver in the same manner.”

“There is an acute to chronic workload ratio for every player. Research suggests that a certain amount of workload must be maintained to reduce the risk of injuries and going above or below that workload could pose a risk.”

“As much as you can be over bowled, you can also be under bowled. Workload is not only for bowling but training, too. It should be measured from all strenuous activities: bowling, batting, fielding, strength work, and conditioning work. It should not spike up or drop from where they can deliver,” Kaushik told SportsBoom.com.

Jasprit Bumrah’s Test Cricket Stats

Jasprit Bumrah is one player who has impressed immensely in Test cricket, having registered exceptional consistency and effectiveness with the ball. In his red-ball career, he has delivered 8,630 balls, where he has given 3,977 runs and took 205 wickets. His performance under pressure has been crucial to India and his economy rate of 2.76 signifies his composure and restraint more so during long spells. With his ability to take important wickets and keep fine lines, Bumrah has established himself as one of the most intimidating fast bowlers in the contemporary Test cricket.
