Squid Game Season 2 ending is sure to surprise many viewers, as Gi-hun and his fellow players risk everything in their quest to finally put an end to the deadly game. With higher stakes and more danger than ever before, Gi-hun needs his plan to succeed. Meanwhile, Jun-ho is getting closer to discovering the hidden truths behind everything, raising hopes that they can both achieve their goals. However, the finale wraps up with an unexpected twist that will definitely set the stage for the show’s third and final season.

Prepares for the battle against the guards

Hyun-Ju, a player with military experience, takes charge as the group tries to reach the control room. However, they are quickly discovered by a group of guards dressed in pink, who open fire. Unfortunately, this results in the death of Player 072, causing Dae-ho to become anxious and lose his composure. Gi-hun decides to push ahead, and although In-ho offers to join him, Gi-hun (Player 456) chooses to take Jung-bae (Player 390) with him instead.

As they navigate through a hallway lit in purple, they encounter more of the pink guards who begin to attack them. The two try to fight back, taking down a few guards, but they soon run out of ammunition. Realizing they don’t have enough bullets, Dae-ho decides to return to the main room to collect extra ammunition from the fallen guards.

However, once he gets there, he experiences a panic attack and is unable to return with the supplies. Concerned for Dae-ho, Hyun-ju heads back to check on him, but unfortunately, she arrives just as another group of pink guards enters the room, preventing her from rejoining the others.

In-ho leads two players, number 047 and 015, up some purple stairs and through another entrance to help his friends, Gi-hun and Jung-bae, take control of a different area. However, In-ho betrays them and ends up killing both players, leaving everyone feeling hopeless and surrendering as they realize they have no chance of winning.

Meanwhile, two other players, 145 and 246, including Gyung-seok, a father whose daughter was sick outside, are also killed by the guards. Then, the Front Man, who is back and wearing a mask, confronts Gi-hun and Jung-bae. He questions Gi-hun’s intentions, mocking him for trying to be a hero, and says, “Witness the consequences of your little game.”

The Front Man then shoots and kills Jung-bae right in front of Gi-hun. The episode concludes with Gi-hun helplessly watching his best friend’s death as the guards close in on him, while the Front Man walks away.

Spoiler

In-Ho, who captivated audiences as the enigmatic Front Man in the thrilling finale of Season 1, makes an epic return. This time, however, he’s not just leading the game, he’s in the competition as the mysterious new Player 001, going by the name Young-il. Watch the series as he participates in the games alongside other players, only to betray them in the final episode and return to his Front Man persona.

Why the Front Man took on the role of Player 001

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hwang explained that he had the character In-ho enter the game disguised as Player 001 because Gi-hun (Player 456), the main character, doesn’t recognize him by his appearance but only by his voice. The director of Season 2 said: “We needed a new 001. I thought I would tell that story of him coming into the game, observing and manipulating Gi-hun, pretending to help but in fact bringing all of his attempts to a failure.”

Hwang shared that In-ho had a reason for joining the game that was similar to Gi-hun’s. Both characters faced tough challenges in their lives, which drove them to take part in the game. “He [In-ho] experienced all of the cruelties, saw the rock bottom of humanity, and was extremely disappointed, which led to him giving up humanity altogether. That’s how he became a host. Much like the story of Darth Vader who couldn’t become a Jedi.”
