Some took law into their hands: Sharad Pawar fumes over unrest in Maharashtra over Tripura incident

NCP chief Sharad Pawar  criticised people who took to the streets and created ruckus in Maharashtra against the alleged violence in Tripura late last month and said that it was not right.

Pawar, whose NCP is part of the coalition government in Maharashtra, also slammed political parties for supporting such reactions.

“The reaction seen in Maharashtra over the Tripura issue, during which some people took the law into their hands, was not right. To oppose that, some people took to the streets. That too was not right. It is wrong on part of political parties to support such things,” he said.

Earlier this month, several incidents of violence and stone-pelting were reported in some parts of Maharashtra, including Nashik, Amravati, and Nanded districts during protests against the alleged Tripura violence.

At least 20 FIRs were registered in connection with the incidents of stone-pelting and 20 persons were arrested in Maharashtra.

Some organisations also observed bandh in Muslim-dominated areas of Mumbai and Thane to protest against the alleged incidents targeting the minority community in the north-eastern state.

On October 26, a group of people protesting the attack on Hindus in Bangladesh had reportedly indulged in violence in Panisagar in Tripura, reportedly causing damage to a mosque, houses and shops.

However, the Union Home Ministry said news circulating on social media about damage and vandalisation of a mosque in Tripura is fake and complete misrepresentation of facts.

In a strongly worded statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said there is no reported case of damage of the structure of any mosque in Tripura in the recent past and that people should maintain calm and should not be misguided by such fake reports.

“There have been news reports that have been circulating that a mosque in Kakraban area of Gomati district in Tripura has been damaged and vandalised. These news reports are fake and are a complete misrepresentation of facts,” it said.

The home ministry said that in Maharashtra, there have been reports of violence and unsavoury statements that are aimed at disturbing peace and harmony based on fake news regarding Tripura.
