Although the Punjab Kings could not claim the IPL, their captain, Shreyas Iyer, has shown some excellent skills in managing the team’s position and placing them at the top of the points table. He led to Kolkata Knight Riders team to victory last year, and not retaining him was a very shocking move from the KKR management. Despite being acquired by a new franchise, Iyer displayed great prowess as a batter and a captain as well. According to The Indian Express, Shreyas Iyer has officially joined the captaincy race.

“Right now he just plays ODIs but after this IPL we can’t keep him out of T20 internationals and even Tests. Plus he also has now officially joined the white-ball captaincy race.” An official told The Indian Express.

Shreyas Iyer’s In IPL 2025

Apart from leading the team with success, Iyer has gotten to the second position among the team’s leading run scorers. From 17 IPL matches this season, Iyer has made a total of 604 runs and an impressive average of over 50. per innings with a good strike rate of 174.69. Iyer recorded his best performance of the season during Punjab Kings’ opening match, where he made 97 runs against Gujarat Titans that helped his team win by 11 runs in hand.

Shreyas Iyer in List A matches

So far, Shreyas has led his team as captain in 100 T20 matches. Moreover, under Eck’s leadership, his teams have managed to win 61 matches and lose 37. At the same time, the right-handed batter led the team to win 29 matches out of a total of 42 played in List A cricket. He has only lost 10 matches while leading the side in List A. In August 2025, when India goes to Bangladesh for ODIs and T20Is, Shreyas is likely to represent Team India. He is also the only captain to lead a team to 3 finals in the White ball format.
