‘She won West Bengal by fluke’: BJP reacts to TMC mouthpiece calling Mamata ‘face of opposition against Modi’

A day after the Trinamool Congress claimed that party supremo Mamata Banerjee, and not Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, has emerged as the face of the opposition against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya took a dig at the West Bengal CM saying, “I wish her good luck in her daydreaming”.

“Mamata Banerjee won the West Bengal elections by fluke. Had it not been for a few electoral factors she would have lost. And now she is harbouring the ambition of being a prime minister. I wish her good luck in her daydreaming,” Surya said while speaking to the media in Gujarat.

Meanwhile, the Congress in West Bengal declined to comment on the article saying it is too early to predict who will become an alternative face to Modi.

TMC’s Bengali mouthpiece “Jago Bangla” ran a cover story titled: “Rahul Gandhi failed, Mamata is the alternate face”.

“The country is seeking an alternative face. I have known Rahul Gandhi for a long time, but I must say he has failed to emerge as an alternative face to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. But Mamata Banerjee has been successful in emerging as an alternative face to Modi,” the story quoted the TMC’s Lok Sabha party leader Sudip Bandopadhyay as saying.

The entire country is now supporting Mamata Banerjee, Bandopadhyay reportedly said at a party programme recently.

Reacting to the TMC’s assertion, state Congress chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said the grand old party is not going into a debate over who is successful and who is not.

“We don’t get into a debate over who is successful and who is not. It is 2021, and the Lok Sabha polls are due in 2024. Rahul Gandhi has been the most consistent opposition face against the Modi government since 2014,” he added.
