A Man United legend who was admired by Sir Alex Ferguson a lot has spoken out about the “huge mistake” he made during his Old Trafford days. Sir Alex, one of football’s all-time great managers, guided United to an unprecedented era of success during which he won 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League titles. His teams were stacked with global superstars like Eric Cantona and Ronaldo, as well as Schmeichel. And now the Red Devils blood who enjoyed a successful spell under Ferguson has admitted leaving United was a big call, but left him with an “added the thing.”

Schmeichel On His ‘Massive Mistake’ And Regrets Over Leaving Man United

Schmeichel ranks among Sir Alex Ferguson’s top signings and one of the most legendary goalkeepers in the world, Schmeichel has revealed his regrets about leaving Man United in 1999. The legendary Danish goalkeeper won five Premier League titles, a Champions League and three FA Cups at Old Trafford, but in his new documentary Schmeichel said leaving the club to join Sporting CP was a “massive mistake”. Schmeichel revealed he was then “mentally fatigued” and, “completely drained” which ultimately informed his decision. However he accepted that it was not easy to leave United but that joining Portugal would provide him with priceless life lessons and friendships which he still treasures to this day.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s Admiration For Peter Schmeichel

The Danish goalkeeper moved to Sporting CP following his exit from Man United, before returning to England with Aston Villa in 2001. In a surprising twist, he would then sign for United’s rivals Manchester City in 2002 before retiring himself in 2003. Sir Alex Ferguson, in what is now the Schmeichel documentary, spoke of his profound admiration for the legendary goalkeeper: “Great player, great character.” Former United manager hammers home the 100-year time span with: “If you look at the 100-year history of Man United, Peter is right there at the top of it.”
