February 15, 2022, was a tragic day for the entertainment industry as we lost legendary singer and composer, Bappi Lahiri. The Disco King of India passed away due to a sleep-related disease and his demise sent shockwaves across the country. From politicians to celebs in the Hindi and South film industry, everyone mourned the loss of the man who gave us unforgettable songs. Apart from his peppy and popular discography, Bappi Da was known for one more thing – his undivided love for gold jewelry.

The man styled his elaborate and heavily sequined outfits with a dozen chains and made a mark for himself in the industry. He had once revealed that gold is lucky for him and every chain that he wore was related to the hits he gave throughout his career. Having said that, did you know that once the late actor Raaj Kumar had enquired Bappi Da about his love for gold jewelry while they were together on a flight?

Recently, in an interview with Etimes, Saira Banu, actress and wife of late Dilip Kumar, recalled how Raaj Kumar had quipped about Bappi Da’s love for gold. It so happened that Kumar and Bappi Lahiri were taking a flight together. Bappi Da took a seat next to Kumar and they both got to talking. While talking, Kumar enquired about Bappi Da wearing so much gold and the significance of the same. 

The veteran singer got to talking and explained why he wears gold. After listening to Bappi Da for some time, Raaj Kumar was quick to quip: “While I understand all this, where’s your mangalsutra?”. The duo apparently burst out laughing and days after his meeting with Kumar, Bappi Da narrated this incident to Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu. 

Bappi Da passed away aged 69 on Tuesday night. He was cremated today at Mumbai’s Pawan Hans crematorium. The family waited for his Bappa to return from LA with his wife and his daughter. Several photos from the last rites hit the web after which fans mourned the loss of the singer and sent condolences to the bereaved family.
