Sachin Tendulkar recalls Sunil Gavaskar’s advice which helped the Master Blaster improve as a batsman

Legendary batsman and former Team India skipper Sunil Gavaskar is celebrating his 72nd birthday today. Regarded as the greatest of all time in the history of the gentlemen’s game, Gavaskar shattered almost every major batting record in his iconic career for Team India. Saluting the original Littler Master on his special day, Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar recalled Gavaskar’s advice which helped the legendary batsman in improving as a batsman.

Taking a trip down memory lane, Tendulkar shared a video on social media in which the batting maestro shared the advice he received from his mentor and cricket icon. Making his presence felt in the international arena at a young age, Tendulkar was a part of the Indian national team when the Men In Blue toured England for bilateral series back in 1990. Gavaskar had advised Tendulkar after the Lord’s Test in which the Master Blaster was removed for a mediocre score of 27.

“We have interacted on various occasions but I remember, the first time I started playing for India in 1990 after the Lord’s Test match where I was dismissed for 27, trying to nudge a ball which was not in line. I could have left the ball but I got out at second slip. That time he walked up to me and said (in Marathi) ‘Let go of the ball outside, play close to your body.’ And that stayed with me,” Tendulkar recalled

Tendulkar revealed that he worked on Gavaskar’s teachings in the practice sessions and his advice helped him improve as a batsman. Tendulkar went on to add that Gavaskar extended his help to the Indian players whenever the Little Master got the chance to meet the members of Team India. Besides Tendulkar, the 72-year-old cricket legend was wished by several famous faces and luminaries of the cricket fraternity. Legendary batsman Gavaskar played 125 Tests and 108 ODIs for Team India.
