Rift In England Camp? Andrew Flintoff Set To Leave National Side After Fallout With Jos Buttler

Andrew Flintoff, England’s former captain and a key figure in their iconic 2005 Ashes win, is set to step down from his coaching role within the national white-ball team.

Andrew Flintoff’s Clash With Jos Buttler Leaves England Cricket In Disarray

According to a report by England’s Telegraph, Flintoff and Jos Buttler, the white-ball captain, struggled to connect, which ultimately led to his departure. Stand-in head coach Marcus Trescothick is now likely to be given the chance to assemble his own coaching team. Flintoff, who was initially brought on in a short-term consultancy role, will not be part of the squad’s coaching setup for the upcoming white-ball series against Australia, featuring three T20Is and five ODIs. He is expected to shift his focus toward more prominent coaching roles, following a successful spell with Northern Superchargers in The Hundred. Under Flintoff’s guidance, the Superchargers won five out of seven matches, narrowly missing the playoffs, marking a strong debut as a head coach.

Despite these achievements, reports indicate that Flintoff and Buttler’s partnership did not evolve as anticipated, particularly during the T20 World Cup in June. While Buttler remains in charge of England’s white-ball side after Matthew Mott’s dismissal, he appears to have built a closer working relationship with Marcus Trescothick.

Marcus Trescothick Likely To Take On The Head Coach Role

Trescothick has played a significant role in Buttler’s development since their time together at Somerset, and Buttler has consistently sought his advice on his batting, strengthening their rapport over time.

After England’s second day of the Test against Sri Lanka, where they ended at 259 for six with a 23-run lead, Trescothick left open the possibility of taking on full-time head coach role.

“I’m looking forward to the opportunity, for sure,” he said. “I’m really excited about doing the job. We’ll work it out a little bit more from there.

“It’s not something I ever thought about before, until I got this opportunity now. I’m not necessarily thinking any further ahead than the end of the Australia series. I’ve been very much focussed on the job we’re doing here.”

England is currently hosting Sri Lanka in a three-match Test series which started on August 21 in Manchester.
