The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced on Saturday, May 17, 2025, that it will soon issue new Rs 20 banknotes bearing the signature of Governor Sanjay Malhotra, as stated in an official release. As per the notice, “The Reserve Bank of India will shortly issue 20 denomination Banknotes in Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series bearing the signature of Shri Sanjay Malhotra, Governor. The design of these notes is similar in all respects to 20 banknotes in Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series. All banknotes in the denomination of Rs 20 issued by the Reserve Bank in the past will continue to be legal tender.”

The official website of the RBI indicates that new Rs 20 banknotes from the Mahatma Gandhi Series measure 63 mm x 129 mm and have a greenish-yellow base colour. The note has a picture of the Ellora Caves on the other side, representing India’s cultural history, as well as other designs and patterns that go along with the base colours.
