Ram Gopal Varma says Bollywood doesn’t ‘seem to know how to make superhits’, tweets on death of remakes after Shahid Kapoor’s Jersey

Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor’s Jersey, a remake of National Award-winning Telugu film of the same name, has failed to make a mark at the box office. The original film starring Nani had received rave reviews from the audience while the recently-released Hindi adaption has received a lukewarm response at the box office. Talking about the “disastrous fate” of the Shahid Kapoor-starrer, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has predicted the death of remakes.
On Tuesday (April 26), RGV took a jibe at Bollywood for hoping “to survive on remakes” and said that the Hindi film industry doesn’t seem to know how to make superhit films.
“The DISASTROUS fate of JERSEY film in Hindi signals the DEATH of REMAKES for the simple reason it has been proved multiple times that dubbed films like #Pushpa #RRR #KGF2 are doing far better than originals, if the content is good #DeathOfRemakes,” read his tweet.
Using the same hashtag, he added, “If Nani ‘s original JERSEY from Telugu was dubbed and released it would have costed the producers just 10 lakhs whereas the remake in Hindi costed 100 cr resulting in losing enoromous money ,time, effort and face #DeathOfRemakes.”
In the subsequent tweets, he spoke about the monstrous successes of dubbed films like PushpaRRR and KGF2, and said, “No south film with good content will be sold for remake rights as even both the content and regional stars are being liked by the Hindi audiences #DeathOfRemakes.”
He also called Telugu and Kannada films a virus that has “infected” the Hindi film industry and said that he’s hoping “that Bollywood will soon come up with a vaccine”.
