Actors Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar’s upcoming film Badhaai Do is being touted as a spiritual sequel to Ayushmann Khurrana’s National Award-winning film Badhaai Ho! It revolves around two closeted homosexuals who are forced to tie the knot with each other by their conservative families. The film that aims at challenging stereotypes will see Bhumi Pednekar as a lesbian PT teacher while Rajkummar plays the role of a gay cop.
While the trailer shows Bhumi romancing Paatal Lok actress Chum Darang, details about Rajkummar’s on-screen boyfriend are being kept under wraps. In an exclusive interview, we asked the actor and film’s director Harshvardhan Kulkarni if there’s a special surprise for the audience. Here’s how they reacted to it…
Pointing at the poster of Badhaai Do, where Rajkummar and his co-star Bhumi are seen covering each other’s mouths with their fingers, the director said, “You will find out. Some things have to be kept a surprise.” When asked if there’s a special cameo by another popular Bollywood star, Rajkummar teased, “Ho sakta hai it is me only, double role?”
Without revealing any further details, Kulkarni added, “You will have to see the film and see who it is. It is a nice and wonderful thing that people will get to see soon.”
Badhaai Do is set to release theatrically on February 11. For Rajkummar, this is one of the most special films in his career of 12 years. The Stree actor said, “We are very hopeful that it will get a lot of love because I have seen the film and I am extremely proud of the film. I am very happy with the way it has turned out. My friends and loved ones have also seen it and they have loved it. So, we are pretty sure that everybody will be super proud of the film.”
Meanwhile, talking about the casting of Badhaai Do, the director said, “Because it is a bigger family this time, it required a lot of actors and a supporting cast. For me, primarily, it has always been about you getting the casting right. You just spend all your energies doing that. I think it makes life so much more joyous on the set.”
“Our whole endeavour was that; to just look for the perfect people and those who are just outstanding in their craft,” he added.
