Congress MP and LoP, Rahul Gandhi, attacked Centre, terming MGNREGA overhaul is an “insult to Mahatma Gandhi”.

Rahul Gandhi lashes out at Modi govt

The Congress leader wrote on X, “Modi ji has a deep dislike for two things – the ideas of Mahatma Gandhi and the rights of the poor. MGNREGA is the living embodiment of Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of Gram Swaraj. It has been a lifeline for millions of rural Indians and proved to be a crucial economic safety net during the COVID pandemic. Yet, this scheme has always unsettled PM Modi. For the past ten years, his government has systematically tried to weaken it. Today, he is determined to erase MGNREGA altogether.”

Govt introduces VB-G Ram G Bill 2025

Rahul Gandhi’s reaction came after the Centre has introduced the Viksit Bharat Guarantee For Rozgar And Ajeevika Mission (Grameen) (VB-G Ram -G Bill) 2025 in the Lok Sabha to replace the MGNREGA for rural employment.

‘Govt targeting livelihood of poor rural families’

Rahul Gandhi hit out at the government, saying that the new will target the secure livelihood of poor rural families. He further said on X, “Rahul Gandhi hit out at the government, saying that the new will target the secure livelihood of poor rural families.”

‘Govt wants to transform MGNREGA into a tool’

The Congress MP also alleged that the government wants to transform MGNREGA into a tool of centralised control.

He said in the tweet, ” Now, Modi ji wants to transform MGNREGA into a tool of centralised control: 1. Budgets, schemes, and rules will be dictated by the Centre 2. States will be forced to bear 40% of the costs 3. Once funds run out, or during harvest season, workers will be denied employment for months.”
