Punjab Cabinet accepts Attorney General APS Deol’s resignation amid feud with Navjot Singh Sidhu

Punjab Cabinet has accepted the resignation of Attorney General APS Deol, confirmed Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Tuesday. The vacant post will be filled by Wednesday.

Following a Cabinet meeting, CM Channi held a press conference and announced that APS Deol had resigned as the AG of Punjab a few days ago.

“The Cabinet today accepted the resignation and it will be sent to the state governor. Tomorrow, the new AG will be appointed,” said Channi.

The Punjab Chief Minister also announced that the Cabinet has sent names of police officers of over 30 years of service. Out of them, the Centre will send a panel in the coming days.

“We will select a new Director General of Police (DGP) among the panel,” he added.

It should be noted Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu was at loggerheads with APS Deol and had been pushing for his removal.

APS Deol had represented former Punjab DGP Sumedh Singh Saini in cases related to the 2015 desecration incidents and police firing on protesters.

Last week, Deol had attacked Navjot Singh Sidhu, accusing him of obstructing the functioning of the state government and his office as well as “spreading misinformation to gain political advantage”.

His remarks came a day after Sidhu withdrew his resignation as Punjab Congress chief but declared that he will not re-assume charge till Deol is removed as AG and a panel set up for the appointment of the new director general of police (DGP).

Deol had replaced Atul Nanda, who had stepped down in September following the resignation of Amarinder Singh as Punjab chief minister.
