Amid the growing clamour for withdrawal of CAA and restoration of Article 370 after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement of repealing the farm laws, Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Sunday said that “a political drama has begun”.

Prime Minister Modi on Friday announced that the government will withdraw the three farm laws.

Soon after the announcement, Muslim leaders urged the Prime Minister to withdraw the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) while leaders in Jammu and Kashmir have demanded the restoration of Article 370.

“Political drama has begun. Somebody says CAA should be repealed, abrogation of Article 370 should be scrapped. They know it well that CAA is not about taking away citizenship but providing citizenship to oppressed minorities in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan,” Naqvi said during a press meet in Moradabad.

“With the abrogation of Article 370, a lot of issues have been resolved in J&K and Ladakh and people have been brought to the mainstream. They are also becoming a part of the political process,” he added.

The controversial CAA, which grants Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim minorities of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, was passed by Parliament in 2019 triggering widespread protests in different parts of the country.

In August 2019, the Centre revoked Article 370 and bifurcated the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union

PM Modi announces repeal of farm laws

The Prime Minister in a televised address to the nation on Friday said that the Centre will take constitutional measures to repeal the three laws in the coming Winter session of Parliament beginning from November 29.

PM Modi also appealed to protesting farmers to call off their agitation against these reform measures and return home as he called for a new beginning.

The sudden decision came nearly a week before the first anniversary of the farmers’ stir at several border points in Delhi including Singhu.

While farmers’ unions hailed the announcement as a huge victory, opposition parties claimed that the decision was taken in view of the upcoming Assembly elections in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, which have a huge base of farmers.
