PM Modi-Yunus Meeting on the Cards in Thailand Amid Chief Adviser’s ‘Landlocked’ Claim On Northeast

The downfall of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina along with her departure leads Bangladesh toward potential strengthened ties with India. Dhaka suggests a potential historic conference involving Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mohammad Yunus who serves as the chief adviser for the interim government of Bangladesh. The 6th BIMSTEC Summit (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) serves as the venue for PM Modi to meet with Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra on Wednesday in Thailand.

Bangladesh’s Meeting Proposal With India

The High Representative to the Chief Adviser on Rohingya issues and other key matters Khalilur Rahman confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune that Bangladesh sent a formal meeting request with optimism regarding its prospects of success. Rahman showed his optimism by telling reporters that this meeting was most likely to take place as per the newspaper’s report. BSS news agency through an unidentified source announced during the summit the leaders would meet for talks when it reported the news.

Yunus’ Comments On Northeast India During China Visit

When he visited China recently Mohammad Yunus made a proposal where he advocated for a Chinese economic expansion into Bangladesh by indicating the potential growth from India’s isolated northeastern areas.

During his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping Yunus signed nine agreements with Beijing while sharing the following observation “The seven states of India located in eastern India are known as the seven sisters. This Indian region exists entirely within the interior parts of the nation. The area remains isolated from the ocean because they possess no access routes.

As the only country with coastline access to the ocean in the region Yunus believed that position could enhance economic opportunities with China.

Political Backlash In India Over Yunus’ Remarks

His social media remarks caused widespread political condemnation across India because legislators from multiple parties described his words as offensive and disrespectful.

The statement made by Yunus required clarification from Khalilur Rahman who explained that it was wrongly understood by critics. “He spoke with honest intentions. The nature of human perception cannot be controlled because different individuals may form divergent interpretations of words,” said Rahman at the Dhaka media briefing.

The government of Bangladesh will take over BIMSTEC chairmanship duties at the upcoming summit. Rahman stressed that Yunus expressed his remarks regarding northeastern India with honest intentions.

India Evaluates Bangladesh’s Request For Bilateral Meeting

The government of New Delhi continues to evaluate Dhaka’s request for a meeting between the two leaders without ruling out such an opportunity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi penned a letter to Mohammad Yunus during March 26 which Bangladesh celebrates as its National Day to establish better bilateral ties by sharing mutual understanding of national issues.

Modi spoke to people in Bangladesh when he declared that today marks our united historical legacy as well as the development of our diplomatic alliance. Our friendship continues to progress in every sector because Bangladesh’s Liberation War spirit directs both nations while providing direct benefits to our people.

India stands devoted to strengthening the partnership through shared objectives focused on peace alongside stability and prosperity which stem from an enhanced understanding of mutual needs. The communication was transmitted on a Wednesday.

Deterioration In India-Bangladesh Relations

The relation between India and Bangladesh became strained after the Rise of Yunus following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina in August 2024 from power. India expresses increasing concern about both rising Hindu-targeted violence in Bangladesh as well as the expanding power of militant Islamist organizations in that country. Recent records show that Hindu religious sites experienced damage alongside physical assaults against Hindu properties across Bangladesh.

A former ISKCON monk named Chinmay Krishna Das faced charges of sedition which led to his arrest and subsequent imprisonment thus creating intense backlash from India.
