Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Mizoram and Manipur on September 13, Aizawl officials stated as per news agency PTI. The Prime Minister is expected to first visit Mizoram, where he will inaugurate the 51.38 km-long Bairabi-Sairang railway line. This new railway line is an important project of the Centre’s Act East Policy to improve connectivity and promote socio-economic development of the region. The rail connection will link Aizawl to the rest of the country and the Bairabi-Sairang line will provide better connectivity from Silchar in Assam. According to details, it will now enhance accessibility and trade for the new start in Mizoram.

Possible Visit To Manipur After Mizoram

After wrapping up his programme in Mizoram, PM Modi will reportedly travel to Manipur. It will be PM Modi’s first visit to Manipur since riots between ethnic communities broke out there in May 2023.  While officials in Mizoram said that they were getting ready for the Prime Minister’s visit, and the full extent of that has not been made clear, they do indicate they were actively preparing. While officials in Imphal indicate that they do not yet have official notice of the visit.

Preparations Going Ahead In Aizawl

Earlier on Monday Mizoram Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena held a review meeting with several departments of the police and other departments in order to establish what their preparations for the Prime Minister’s visit would be. In addition, among the discussions were security precautions, traffic management and public reception. Authorities are organizing for government employees, Farmers and schools and colleges to be present at the inauguration at Lammaul in Aizawl.

Ethnic Violence In Manipur

It is important to note the significance of the Prime Minister’s likely visit to Manipur in light of the ongoing ethnic tensions in the state. Since May 2023, clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities have been violent, leading to loss of at least 60 lives, property damage, and thousands displaced. Manipur is currently under President’s rule, which was established on February 13, 2025, after the then-chief minister N Biren Singh stepped down on February 9. The assembly, which has a term until 2027, has been put into suspended animation.
