Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured Parliament that India has strengthened its energy security by expanding the number of countries it imports fuel from. Addressing the Lok Sabha, PM Modi said India now imports crude oil, LPG and PNG from 41 countries, compared to 27 earlier. The move, he said, is aimed at protecting the country from global supply disruptions, especially amid rising tensions in West Asia.
PM Modi also said the government is closely monitoring the situation in West Asia and taking steps to ensure that the supply of petrol, diesel and cooking gas remains stable across the country.
India expands energy import network
Highlighting the government’s strategy to secure fuel supplies, PM Modi said diversifying energy sources has become crucial in the current global scenario.
“Earlier, India used to import energy from 27 countries. Now the number has increased to 41,” he told the Lok Sabha. “Continuous efforts are being made to ensure that the supply of petrol and diesel remains smooth across India.”
PM Modi’s remarks came after the government reviewed the possible impact of the ongoing West Asia conflict on India’s economy, supply chains and availability of essential commodities.
He also stressed that the safety of Indian citizens abroad remains the government’s top priority. He said Indian missions in the affected region are providing all possible assistance to nationals during the crisis.
Enough coal stocks, power supply stable
PM Modi also reassured the House that India has sufficient coal stocks and there is no immediate risk to electricity supply.
“At present, we have enough coal stocks,” he said, adding that farmers and other sectors will continue to receive necessary support from the government.
The Prime Minister also warned against misinformation and illegal activities during the crisis. “I have seen some people spreading lies and there are reports of black marketing. I have asked state governments to take the strictest action in such cases,” he said.
Government prioritises domestic LPG consumers
Speaking about cooking gas supply, PM Modi said India imports around 60 per cent of its LPG requirement. Due to global uncertainties, the government has prioritised supply for domestic consumers.
