Australian fast bowler Pat Cummins’ tweet announcing his help towards the COVID-19 relief efforts in India was the ‘most retweeted tweet’ of 2021 in India. Cummins had offered to donate $50000 to help India fight the pandemic.
During the months of April and May earlier this year, India was hit by a deadly second wave of the virus because of which the country was recording lakhs of cases and thousands of deaths every single day.
At the time, Cummins who was playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 volunteered to help India fight the crisis. His gesture was widely applauded by people across the country.
In a statement, Twitter said, “As the second COVID-19 wave hit India, people from across the world came forward to support the country. Among them was Australian cricketer Pat Cummins, who made a donation towards COVID relief in India, and took to Twitter to encourage others to do the same. The generosity of the Tweet received gratitude from people all over the country, making this the most Retweeted Tweet in India in 2021.”
Infact, Cummins’ tweet was also the ‘most quote tweeted tweet’ of 2021 in India. So far, the tweet which Cummins made on 26th April 2021 has more than 114000 retweets and 21.9K quote tweets.
The 2021 IPL was being played in India but was suspended mid-way in May after there was an outbreak of COVID-19 in various camps across the eight teams. The tournament was concluded in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in September-October but Cummins did not play the second leg.
Apart from Cummins’ tweet, Indian Test skipper Virat Kohli’s post announcing the birth of his daughter Vamika was the ‘most liked tweet’ of the year in India. Infact, Kohli’s post announcing wife Anushka Sharma’s pregnancy was the ‘most liked tweet’ of 2020.
