Parliamentary Committee on Home Affairs defers visit to Goa, Hyderabad amid Covid surge

A proposed visit of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs has deferred its trip to Goa and Hyderabad amid Covid-19 surge, confirmed officials on Saturday.

The tour was scheduled from January 7 to January 11, read the order from Rajya Sabha Secretariat, adding that the fresh date of the study visit will be informed as and when finalised.

According to reports, Congress leader Anand Sharma is the chairman of the Standing Committee on Home Affairs and was expected to lead the delegation to Hyderabad and Goa.

The delegation was to visit the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, the Cherlapally Central Jail and the National Industrial Security Academy of the CISF in Hyderabad.

In Goa, the panel was to hold separate meetings with officials of Mormugao Port Trust and Goa Shipyard and officers of the Home Ministry on disaster preparedness and security arrangements at the port and shipyard.

It was also supposed to hold meetings with officials of state marine police and Coast Guard on the issue of coastal security.

Reports say that the department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee is looking into training, modernisation and reforms in police and condition, infrastructure and reforms in prisons.

Other than that, the Committee can be referred to by the Chairman or Speaker of the house to examine Bills related to the respective ministries. It can also be called in to consider the annual reports of the ministries report thereon.
