Parambir Singh again skips Chandiwal Commission’s summon, CID says couldn’t trace him

Former Mumbai Police commissioner Param Bir Singh did not appear before the state-appointed Chandiwal Commission on Wednesday. The CID told the commission that it went to several known addresses of Singh to serve him notice but couldn’t find him.

The government-appointed Justice (retired) KU Chandiwal Commission of enquiry asked Singh to appear before it on October 18.

The Commission is probing the allegations of corruption of Rs 100 crore levelled by the former Mumbai Police chief against former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh.

In April, Singh had stoked a huge controversy by sending a ‘letter-missile’ to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray alleging corruption by Nationalist Congress Party leader Anil Deshmukh.

Following Singh’s explosive letter, the Bombay High Court ordered a preliminary enquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against Deshmukh.

Notably, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government registered cases of alleged extortion, cheating, forgery, and set up Chandiwal Commission to probe the charges against Param Bir Singh.

Meanwhile, speculations are rife that the former Mumbai Police commissioner, now Commandant-General of Home Guards, may have fled the country.

Congress has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of “a definite role in giving a safe passage” to Singh.

“If Singh has fled India, then there has to be a definite role of BJP in giving a safe passage to him. Quite clear that saving Singh supports the agenda of BJP,” state Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant said.

Earlier, Singh skipped several summonses by the Commission, following which the enquiry panel fined him thrice and asked him to pay the penalties of Rs 5,000 and Rs 25,000 twice by depositing them in the CM Relief Fund.

The panel had then warned Singh that it would raise the penalty if he fails to appear before it.
