In a landmark achievement, India is turning the dream of safe drinking water at every tap into reality. On Monday, the government announced a transformative milestone: over 80% of rural households now have potable water connections. Launched in 2019, the Jal Jeevan Mission – Har Ghar Jal has tirelessly worked to ensure clean drinking water through tap supply, bringing hope and health to millions across the nation.

The Minister of State for Jal Shakti, V. Somanna, in a written reply to a question in the Parliament, said, “As on 16.07.2025, out of 19.36 Crore rural households in the country, more than 15.67 Crore (80.93%) households are reported to have tap water supply in their homes.” According to an official press release, this remarkable feat was made possible through the collective efforts of the Central and State Governments.

At the start of the Jal Jeevan Mission, only 3.23 Crore (16.7% rural households had tap water connections. Now, around 12.43 Crore additional rural households have been added to the list within the last six years. To ensure that the taps are not just connected but water is available, the Government is regularly monitoring the successful implementation of their Jal Jeevan mission by carrying out assessments through independent third-party agencies – review meetings, conferences, workshops, video conferences, etc. Findings of the functionality Assessment 2022 reveal:

  • 86% households had working tap connections
  • 85% received enough quantities of water
  • 80% received a regular supply of water
  • 87% received water that met prescribed quality standards

The Central Government continues to work closely with the State Governments. The functionality survey for 2024 is currently underway.
