Not Just Nicholas Pooran, THESE 4 Players Also Announced Shocking Retirements – Includes Two Indian Stars!

The world of cricket surely knows retirements are inevitable, but some announcements do tend to hit harder than others. Whether it was the timing, circumstances, or the legacy that left an indelible mark on the player’s career, some retirement announcements were surely more shocking than others. Here are five of the most surprising cricket retirements featuring legends who walked away when still at the peak of their powers.

AB de Villiers

One of the most gifted batters of the modern era, AB de Villiers shocked the cricketing world in May 2018 when he announced his retirement from international cricket. What made it even more surprising was that he was still in top form, having played crucial roles for South Africa across formats.

Known for his 360-degree batting and athleticism in the field, AB had the ability to turn games on their head. His decision left a significant void in South Africa’s lineup and was met with disbelief across the cricketing world.

MS Dhoni

MS Dhoni’s retirement from international cricket was as unconventional as his career quiet, sudden, and without any farewell match. On August 15, 2020, India’s Independence Day, Dhoni took to Instagram and posted a montage of his cricketing journey with the caption, “Thanks. Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout. From 1929 hrs consider me as Retired.”

There was no press conference, no grand send-off just a video and millions of hearts broken. As India’s most successful captain and one of the finest finishers in cricket history, his understated retirement mirrored his calm demeanor on the field. It was shocking, not because it was unexpected, but because of the low-key manner in which it unfolded.

Virat Kohli

While Virat Kohli hasn’t retired from international cricket, his sudden step down from Test captaincy in May 2025 was a move that stunned the cricketing community. After India’s series loss to Australia, Kohli took the decision to bid farewell from the longest format of the game.

With 40 wins in 68 Tests, he was India’s most successful Test captain and a driving force behind India’s aggressive, world-beating red-ball strategy. Fans were left wondering about the reasons behind his departure, especially as there had been no strong indications of it. His leadership in Tests was considered iconic, and the timing of his resignation caught many off guard.

Nicholas Pooran

While not a retirement from international cricket, Nicholas Pooran’s decision to step down as West Indies’ limited-overs captain in late 2022 was both surprising and symbolic. After a disappointing T20 World Cup campaign, where West Indies failed to qualify for the Super 12s, Pooran took full responsibility and relinquished his leadership role.

At just 27, many saw him as the future of Caribbean cricket, especially after taking over from Kieron Pollard. His leadership exit so early in his career raised questions about West Indies cricket’s direction and the immense pressure their young players face.

Kevin Pietersen

Kevin Pietersen’s retirement was not just shocking, it was controversial. Known for his flamboyant style and fierce individuality, KP had a career filled with brilliance and drama. In 2014, following England’s Ashes whitewash in Australia, the ECB decided to end Pietersen’s international career, citing dressing room issues and team dynamics.

Pietersen himself never formally announced his retirement at that time, as he felt he still had a lot to offer. What stunned the cricketing world was how unceremoniously one of England’s most talented and entertaining batsmen was shown the door. To this day, fans debate whether English cricket mishandled one of its biggest stars.
