‘No one is…’: Trump’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner scare renews spotlight on Obama’s 2011 jibe; here’s what he said

US President Donald Trump attended the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday, marking his first time at the high-profile event since assuming office. The annual gathering, known for bringing together journalists, politicians and celebrities, had been skipped by Trump during his earlier tenure, making this appearance particularly notable.

Evening disrupted by security threat

The event took an unexpected turn later in the night when Trump, along with several senior US officials, was evacuated following a security alert. Authorities have not disclosed details about the nature of the threat and there were no immediate reports of injuries. The situation was handled swiftly, with security agencies ensuring the safe removal of attendees.

The incident has once again drawn attention to a memorable moment from the 2011 White House Correspondents’ Dinner. That year, then-President Barack Obama and comedian Seth Meyers delivered sharp remarks aimed at Trump, who was present in the audience.

During his speech, Obama directly addressed Trump while referencing the controversy surrounding his own birthplace. In a series of jokes, Obama suggested that Trump could now shift his focus to other conspiracy theories, prompting strong reactions and widespread media coverage at the time.

‘Now, I know he’s taken some flak lately, but no one is happier, no one is prouder to put this birth certificate matter to rest than The Donald.’

Background of the controversy

The 2011 exchange came amid a period when Trump had been publicly questioning Obama’s citizenship. The issue gained significant traction, eventually leading to the release of Obama’s long-form birth certificate by Hawaiian authorities later that year to put the matter to rest

Over the years, that dinner has been frequently revisited in political discussions. Some observers believe the public exchange helped elevate Trump’s visibility on the national stage ahead of his presidential campaign. However, Trump has consistently dismissed this view, stating in past interviews that his decision to run for office was influenced by a range of factors rather than that single event.
