Former India opener and cricketing icon Virender Sehwag has revealed his ‘Team of the Tournament’ for the recently concluded IPL 2025 season. Alongside fellow cricket expert Manoj Tiwari, Sehwag selected a team comprising standout performers from this year’s campaign, unveiling the lineup on Cricbing. Notably, Shreyas Iyer, who led Punjab Kings to the final, has been named the captain of Sehwag’s XI.

Opening Pair: Sai Sudharsan and Virat Kohli

Sehwag’s choice of openers highlights a mix of youth and experience. Sai Sudharsan, the season’s leading run-scorer, had a phenomenal IPL with 759 runs at an average of 54.21 and a strike rate of 156.17, including a century and six half-centuries. He is partnered by Virat Kohli, who played a pivotal role in RCB’s maiden title win, scoring 657 runs with an average of 54.75 and a strike rate of 144.71.

Powerful Middle Order

The middle order features a dynamic mix of power-hitters and consistent performers:

Nicholas Pooran (Lucknow Super Giants): 524 runs in 14 matches, averaging 43.67 with a stunning strike rate of 196.25.

Shreyas Iyer (Punjab Kings, Captain): Scored 604 runs in 17 matches, averaging 50.33 at a strike rate of 175.07.

Suryakumar Yadav (Mumbai Indians): Notched up 717 runs in 16 games with an impressive average of 65.18 and a strike rate of 167.91.

Heinrich Klaasen (Sunrisers Hyderabad): Delivered crucial knocks, including a century against KKR, tallying 487 runs in 13 matches with a strike rate of 172.69.

Bowling Attack: A Balanced Mix

Sehwag’s bowling lineup is filled with match-winners from across franchises:

Josh Hazlewood (RCB): Key figure in RCB’s title run, taking 22 wickets in 12 matches with an economy of 8.77.

Prasidh Krishna (GT): Highest wicket-taker of the season with 25 scalps in 15 games, economy of 8.27.

Noor Ahmad (CSK): Impressed with 24 wickets in 14 matches, maintaining an economy of 8.16.

Jasprit Bumrah (MI): One of the most economical bowlers this season, taking 18 wickets in 12 matches at just 6.67 runs per over.

Kuldeep Yadav (Delhi Capitals): Claimed 14 wickets with a tight economy of 7.07 in 14 matches, despite DC not making the playoffs.

Impact Player: Jitesh Sharma

Sehwag selected Jitesh Sharma as the impact player of the tournament. Representing RCB, Jitesh played a crucial finisher’s role, scoring 261 runs in 15 matches with a strike rate of 176.35 and an average of 37.29.

Notable Omissions: Jaiswal and Gill Left Out

Despite strong performances, Yashasvi Jaiswal (559 runs in 14 matches) and Shubman Gill (650 runs in 15 matches) were not included in Sehwag’s XI. Both had prolific seasons for Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans respectively, but missed out in favor of players who made larger impacts in crucial games.
