New toll rule: Cash users without FASTag to pay double the fee from November 15 – details inside

Non-FASTag vehicles on National Highways will face fresh charges starting November 15, 2025. All citizens are mandated to use FASTag to pay toll taxes. Under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ new NH rules, if a vehicle lacks a valid FASTag, the driver will be charged based on the mode of payment.

Cash users will now pay double the regular toll fee, while those using digital payment methods like UPI or other approved modes will be charged 1.25 times the standard toll. Previously, vehicles without a FASTag had to pay double the toll in cash, causing inconvenience to drivers. However, digital payment has made it easier. For example, if a toll fee is Rs 100 with FASTag, Rs 200 will be charged in cash, but Rs 125 will be charged via UPI.

Furthermore, after November 15, 2025, if vehicle owners have a valid, working Fastag, but the toll plaza machine isn’t working properly and your payment hasn’t been processed, you can cross without paying. With the fresh amendments in the FASTag rules, the Government aims to boost the use of digital payments, reduce waiting times at toll plazas, and minimize reliance on cash transactions.

With this new rule in place, toll collection agencies will be held accountable for machine malfunctions. When people with valid FASTags leave without paying toll taxes, agencies will be pressured to maintain a high-quality toll system.
