The Netherlands won an epic battle against Nepal in the Scotland T20I Tri-Series 2025 at  Titwood, Glasgow, on June 16. This match has its significance as it was the first ever witnessed in any Men’s T20 or List A match that a cricket contest has extended to a third ‘Super Over’. Yes, you heard it right! A third Super Over was played between the two teams to determine the winner. Earlier, there were only two times a double Super Over was played, the first time was between India and Afghanistan in the Third T20I in 2024, and the second time in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2020 between Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings

How Many Super Overs Can Take Place?

Super Over, One-over eliminator, One over per side eliminator, or simply, a tie-breaker, is a format of cricket, usually limited-overs, in which an extra over of cricket replaces a tie. Should a game be a “tie”, then each team will meet in a Super Over, whereby each side will bat one over (six balls) to decide a winner. The side that takes the highest number of runs in a given over is pronounced the victor. After a knockout and a bilateral series match rule change in October 2019, when a Super Over ties, a further Super Over will be played. Therefore, any number of Super Overs can take place unless a winner is decided.

Netherlands Vs Nepal

The Netherlands beat Nepal by a run in the 3 rd Super Over of a T20 match, which was historic, becoming the first ever International match to have three Super Overs. The two teams both had 152 in regulation, and Nepal caused the tie with the final ball. The two initial Super Overs were also tied (19 and 17 runs respectively), and in the third, Nepal were dismissed on 0, and Michael Leask won it with a six on the first ball, returning to the win for the Netherlands.

Twice Double Super Over

In the shortest format of the game, India and Afghanistan were tied: 212 all out. Both scored 16/1 in the first Super Over, tying the scores and creating a second one. The following bowling of Afghanistan, 1/2 and setting of 11/2 saw India winning by 10 runs. For the second time, the first Super Over finished at a tie (55) after both sides recorded 176/6. During a second Super Over, Mumbai scored 11/1, but Punjab came back with 15/0, and Chris Gayle died, hitting a six on the first ball and Mayank Agarwal on his two fours.
