Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli loses vote of confidence in Parliament

In a setback, Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli lost a trust vote in the House of Representatives on Monday.

This came after KP Sharma Oli-led government had on Wednesday lost majority support in the House of Representatives after the CPN (Maoist Center) led by Pushpakamal Dahal “Prachanda” officially withdrew support to it.

According to news agency PTI, Prime Minister Oli secured 93 votes in the lower house of parliament during a special session convened on the directives of President Bidya Devi Bhandari.

The 69-year-old leader required at least 136 votes in the 275-member house to win the confidence motion as four members are currently under suspension. As many as 124 members voted against Oli.

“This government has achieved so much, made never before accomplishments. There is no need to mistrust the government and vote against it,” PM Oli said while he listed the achievements of the government under his leadership.

On December 20 last year, President Bidya Devi Bhandari dissolved the House and announced fresh elections on April 30 and May 10 plunging Nepal into a political crisis. This was done at the recommendation of Prime Minister Oli, amidst a tussle for power within the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP).

Oli’s move to dissolve the House sparked protests from a large section of the NCP led by his rival ‘Prachanda’, also a co-chair of the ruling party.
