Chants of Bharat Mata ki Jai took over the Delhi airport on Monday (August 09) as Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Neeraj Chopra arrived with the rest of the Indian contingent. Chopra and the other Indian players were welcomed with a roaring reception at the airport as thousands of fans gathered at the airport to get a glimpse of the Olympic medallists.

Neeraj was mobbed by the fans as soon as he made his way out of the airport as celebrations were in the air. The Indian men’s hockey team, who won the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics were also welcomed with a grand reception along with wrestling silver medallist Ravi Dahiya and bronze medallist Bajrang Punia.

The Indian women’s hockey team was also welcomed to a grand reception at the airport after a stellar campaign at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 where they qualified for their first-ever semi-final and lost the bronze medal match against Great Britain 3-4 after a close fight. The Rani Rampal-led side left millions back home in awe with their impressive show at the Games.

Chopra, who became India’s first-ever Olympic gold medallist in athletics, was welcomed by his family along with fans and media person present at the airport. The 23-year-old’s family had left Panipat earlier in the morning to welcome their son and India’s new Golden Boy at the New Delhi airport.

Chopra’s village Kandra had erupted into celebrations on Saturday when the star javelin thrower brought an end to the country’s 100-year-long wait for an Olympic medal in athletics with his monstrous 87.58m throw in the men’s javelin final to clinch gold. He became only the second Indian after shooter Abhinav Bindra to clinch a gold medal for India in an individual event at the Olympics.

The top brass of the Sports Authority of India along with several notable politicians were present at the New Delhi airport to welcome India’s Olympians back home from Tokyo. Team India recorded its best-ever medal tally in the history of the Olympics in Tokyo this year with seven medals including one gold.
