Navjot Singh Sidhu to be named Punjab Congress chief, to get four working presidents: Sources

Navjot Singh Sidhu is set to be named the new chief of Punjab Congress, said sources close to party president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday. As many as four working presidents in Punjab will be appointed with Sidhu, added sources.

The development comes after a string of meetings of top Congress leaders with Navjot Singh Sidhu and Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, who have been at loggerheads with each other over various issues.

Earlier in the day, Sidhu met with Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jhakhar at his residence in Panchkula.

Meanwhile, Amarinder Singh held a meeting with the General Secretary in-charge of Punjab Congress, Harish Rawat in Mohali.

After meeting the Punjab CM, Harish Rawat told media, “Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh reiterated that whatever decision will be taken by the Congress president, it will be honoured by him.”

While Raveen Thukral, Media Advisor to Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh quoted the CM as saying, “Had a fruitful meeting with Harish Rawat. Reiterated that any decision of INC president will be acceptable to all. Raised certain issues which he said he’ll take up with the INC president.”

Yesterday, Amarinder Singh, according to sources, had written to Sonia Gandhi expressing his reservations on a possible appointment of party leader Navjot Singh Sidhu as Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief replacing Sunil Jakhar.

A power tussle in Punjab Congress has been going on for some time now with Sidhu openly rebelled against the state government by criticising the electricity crisis in the state.

Congress leadership has been making efforts to find a solution to the rift ahead of assembly polls earlier next year. Rawat had on Friday met Sonia Gandhi and submitted his report regarding proposed changes in the Punjab Congress.
