Former India captain and World Cup winner Mahendra Singh Dhoni, known for his calm composure and demeanor, which is also reflected in his presence on the field. By his attitude on the ground, he got his nickname ‘Captain Cool’, which depicts his temper on the field while playing. This title of MS Dhoni might now be patented, and no one could ever be called ‘Captain Cool’ in the Indian cricket landscape. The former India captain has applied for the trademark on June 5th for this title ‘Captain Cool’ through Rithi Sports Management Pvt. Ltd. This move is termed as a strategic brand play.

Why Dhoni Filed Trademark?

After the application by the former captain, cricket pundits have speculated that it might be a strategic brand play to attract. This move will leverage the apparel business, digital, and merchandise for Dhoni. The company Rithi Sports Management Pvt. Ltd., which is associated with Dhoni. The goal is to officially claim ownership of the nickname, which is widely used to refer to Dhoni’s composed personality, particularly during high-pressure situations in cricket.

Having a trademark gives sportspeople strong legal power to protect their name, logo, or brand. It makes it easier to take legal action if someone else tries to use their identity without permission. A registered trademark also helps when the athlete wants to grow their brand in other countries, making sure their name is safe and respected worldwide.

Trademarks can also help athletes earn money even after they retire. For example, Michael Jordan still makes a lot of money from his “Air Jordan” brand. A trademark can also be used to build a bigger business, like starting a clothing line or opening a sports academy, which helps them leave a lasting legacy.

Other Patented Trademarks

  • Cristiano Ronaldo: Trademarked “CR7”, used for clothing, fragrances, and hotels.
  • Usain Bolt: Trademarked his famous “Lightning Bolt” pose.
  • Serena Williams: Trademarked her name and logo, supporting her ventures in fashion and business.
