‘Modi should be investigated; Amit Shah must resign’: Congress on ‘Pegasus’ allegations

Congress demanded an inquiry against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sought Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s resignation over the allegations of snooping on journalists and political leaders in the country.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) held a separate presser and hit back at Congress saying it has no standing to demand anything from the government. The saffron party also called the allegations completely false and malicious.

An international media consortium reported on Sunday that more than 300 verified mobile phone numbers, including of two serving ministers, over 40 journalists, three opposition leaders and one sitting judge besides scores of businesspersons and activists in India could have been targeted for hacking through an Israeli spyware – Pegasus- sold only to government agencies.

While speaking to media, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge said, “Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah are involved in snooping on Opposition leaders including Rahul Gandhi, journalists and even Union ministers.”

The grand old party has demanded a JPC probe into the allegations that the Modi government has snooped on more than 40 individuals in the country during the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

“But before a probe is launched, Amit Shah sahab should resign and an inquiry should be conducted against Modi sahab,” said Kharge.

Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said, “PM Modi says he promotes Digital India but today we are seeing it as surveillance India.”

“NSO is saying that its products are used exclusively by govt to fight crime and terror. But they are using Pegasus against people who speak against Modi,” he added.

He went on to announce that Congress will raise this matter (Pegasus Project report) along with all Opposition parties in the Parliament tomorrow.
