Mirzapur’s Divyenndu on impact of his character Munna Bhaiya: ‘People get intimidated, feel that I would explode’

Clad in a brown kurta, sturdy goggles, and holding a pistol in his hand, when Munna Bhaiya, aka Divyenndu, made an entry in Mirzapur, he received nothing but whistles and love from the audience. Divyenndu made this negative and intense role, one of the most loved and cherished grey characters of all time and that is a talent in itself.
With the Amazon Prime video hinting towards Mirzapur 3, anticipation about Munna’s characters is pretty high. It’s been a whole year since we saw Divyenndu on screen, but the magic that his role created is still fresh in our memory.
In an exclusive chat with Times Now Digital, Divyenndu spoke about playing Munna Bhaiya, its long-lasting impact on the audience, the treatment he gets from fans and filmmakers, and more.
Talking about the love that he receives even today, he said, “Every day I wake up and scroll my social media, there is a new meme on Munna. The character continues to live with the fans. For them, Munna exists in some parallel universe, it is their spirit animal.”
When we first saw Divyenndu in a boy next door image as Liquid in Pyaar Ka Punchanama, little did we know that one day he will impress everyone as Munna Bhaiya.
Sharing his thoughts on the transition, he said, ” It was absolutely planned in my head. I went to a film school, so doing versatile characters is in my blood. I wanted to pursue something like Munna. Post that, filmmakers have come to me with unique roles. Now they know that I can seep in any character’s skin”
Shooting chilling scenes often takes a toll on an artiste. Talking about the most emotionally-challenging scenes he has done, Divyenndu said,” When Munna had to kill Compounder in Mirzapur 2, it was very triggering for me. The entire set was numb. Compounder was the only friend Munna had, it was very difficult for me to film.”
When asked about the comeback of Munna in Mirzapur 3 he said,” I cannot give any details. The audience will have to wait and watch.”
