Manipur: Curfew Imposed In Jiribam After 11 Militants Killed In Encounter With CRPF

The district administration in Jiribam, Manipur imposed a curfew  following the protests by Kuki-Zo organizations against the killing of 11 suspected militants. According to the DM, the order prohibited carrying firearms, sharp-edged objects, sticks, stones, or any other lethal weapons. However, government officials, security forces, and essential services are exempted from the curfew.

 

Kuki-Zo Organization Calls For A Shutdown

The Kuki-Zo Council on Tuesday announced a complete shutdown, citing the killed people were “village volunteers.” The shutdown was declared from 5 AM to 6 PM to honour the victims and express grief over their brutal murder. The council also demanded a thorough investigation into the incident and legal action against the perpetrators.

The order mentioned that written permission will be required in case of emergencies, marriages, funerals, etc.

Encounter Details

At least 11 suspected militants were killed in a fierce encounter with security forces on Monday after insurgents, dressed in camouflage uniforms, and armed with weapons, fired indiscriminately at a police station and a CRPF camp in Jiribam. According to reports, two CRPF personnel were injured during the exchange and one of them was critical.

Fresh Violence In Imphal Valley

In the aftermath of Jiribam encounter, fresh violence was reported at various places in the Imphal Valley. According to the police, armed groups from both sides were involved in the exchange of fire.
