Mallikarjun Kharge Pledges Caste Census In Maharashtra, Unveils MVA Manifesto

The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), Maharashtra’s opposition alliance, has promised to conduct a caste census and increase the state’s reservation cap if it secures victory in the upcoming assembly elections. At the launch of MVA’s election manifesto, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge emphasized that the caste census aims to enhance equity by understanding the socio-economic positioning of communities. The alliance plans to raise the reservation cap above the current 50 percent limit, similar to Tamil Nadu’s model.

Five Guarantees for Welfare and Growth

The MVA manifesto introduces five primary commitments focused on agriculture, rural and urban development, and healthcare to promote state development. Kharge assured that these initiatives would collectively provide annual financial relief of around Rs 3.5 lakh per household, targeting a significant uplift in family welfare across Maharashtra.

Major Initiatives Highlighted

  • Mahalakshmi Yojna: This new scheme proposes a monthly payment of Rs 3,000 for women, aiming to enhance economic support for households. It expands on the Ladki Behna Yojana, which currently offers Rs 1,500. The incumbent Mahayuti coalition has proposed raising this to Rs 2,100 if re-elected.
  • Health Insurance and Medical Benefits: In line with Rajasthan’s Rs 25 lakh health insurance plan, the MVA promises to introduce a similar scheme in Maharashtra, along with free access to essential medicines for residents.
  • Support for Farmers and Youth: The manifesto promises a farm loan waiver of up to Rs 3 lakh, with an additional Rs 50,000 benefit for those repaying higher amounts. For unemployed graduates and diploma holders, the alliance has pledged a monthly allowance of Rs 4,000, providing financial stability to young job-seekers.
