In a candid interview with BBC Asian Network, Mahira Khan shared a fascinating story from 15 years ago when she was considered for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ambitious project, Heeramandi. Initially planned as a film, the project brought Mahira face-to-face with the celebrated filmmaker during her visit to Mumbai.
Mahira was in Mumbai for her childhood friend’s wedding when mutual acquaintances suggested her name to Bhansali, who was looking for a Pakistani actress. Without her knowledge, Mahira’s friend arranged a meeting with the filmmaker. Recalling the moment, Mahira described Bhansali as “creative and a genius.” During their interaction, Bhansali even asked her to wipe off her lipstick, to which she replied that she wasn’t wearing any. His reaction, she noted, was simply, “Wow.”
The Role That Never Materialised
During their meeting, Bhansali discussed Heeramandi with Mahira. However, due to political tensions and logistical challenges, the project didn’t come to fruition. Reflecting on the experience, Mahira revealed an inner conflict about not disclosing her marital status during the meeting. Unable to sleep, she decided to call Bhansali the next day to confess she was married, explaining that she couldn’t begin her acting career with a lie. Bhansali appreciated her honesty and encouraged her to audition with a scene from Mughal-e-Azam.
Reuniting with Bhansali in Bollywood
Although Mahira didn’t work on Heeramandi, she later met Bhansali again during her Bollywood stint for Raees, where she starred opposite Shah Rukh Khan. Mahira fondly remembers the encounter and holds immense respect for Bhansali’s artistry.
Years later, Heeramandi was reimagined as a web series, featuring a stellar cast including Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Shaikh, and Sharmin Sehgal. The series became a fan favorite, but Mahira’s anecdote remains a testament to her integrity and the respect she commands in the industry.
