Liquor Delivery Coming Soon On Swiggy, BigBasket, Zomato, And Blinkit

Swiggy, BigBasket, and Zomato might soon start delivering liquor, starting with low-alcohol drinks like beer, wine, and liqueurs. According to industry executives cited by the Economic Times, states like New Delhi, Karnataka, Haryana, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Goa, and Kerala are considering pilot projects for this service. Authorities are evaluating the pros and cons of the move. At present, only Odisha and West Bengal permit home delivery of alcohol.

One of the executives explained that this move aims to serve the growing expat population in larger cities and cater to consumers who see moderate alcohol-content spirits as a recreational addition to meals. Additionally, women and senior citizens find buying from traditional liquor stores and shop-fronts unpleasant.

Dinker Vashisht, Swiggy’s vice-president of corporate affairs, stated that online models keep complete transaction records, verify ages, and enforce limits. Additionally, these online systems comply with regulatory and excise rules, including timings, dry days, and delivery zones.

During the Covid-19 lockdowns, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Assam temporarily allowed liquor deliveries with restrictions. According to retail industry executives, online deliveries have increased sales by 20-30% in West Bengal and Odisha.

Rahul Singh, CEO of The Beer Cafe, told that allowing online home deliveries of liquor can improve consumer convenience, boost economic growth, and follow global trends, while ensuring responsible and regulated alcohol distribution.
