The Brit Awards honoured Liam Payne after his death by showing a memorial tribute following his tragic death at age 31 last October when he fell from a hotel balcony in Argentina. Through a video presentation, Jack Whitehall honoured the accomplishments and life story of the deceased pop star.
During the ceremony Whitehall, with a heavy heart said “It is now time to take a moment to remember a very special person who meant so much to many of the people in this room and to millions of you around the world. Last October, we woke to the devastating news that Liam Payne had tragically passed away.”
He further said “He achieved so much in the short time that he was on this earth, and was not only a supremely gifted musician but an incredibly kind soul who touched the lives of everyone he came into contact with. We have so many amazing memories with Liam here at The Brits. So tonight we celebrate his legacy and look back and remember the remarkable Liam Payne,”.
The anniversary ceremony honoured Payne by showing videos with his family and his emerging career from his X Factor journey to his success with One Direction which won seven Brit Awards. The tribute included Payne’s hit “Little Things” along with his royal meeting with Queen Elizabeth II in a montage. The video also included a clip of Payne where he expressed his amazement about his journey “We thought something might happen, but never anything like this. I’m always trying to remind myself of where I’ve come from, and where I’ve managed to get to in my life. It’s amazing.”
Payne along with Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson achieved fame on The X Factor that led to the formation of One Direction. Payne started a successful solo career after One Direction took a break to release his LP1 album in 2019 which included the popular songs “Polaroid,” “Strip That Down,” and “For You” alongside Rita Ora.
Most of One Direction members did not attend the Brit Awards this year but they all attended Liam Payne’s November funeral ceremony and mourned over the devastating loss.
