Congress MLAs on Thursday held a protest outside the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly demanding the resignation of MoS Home Ajay Kumar Mishra whose son Ashish is an accused in the case related to the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.

“We will demand MoS Home’s resignation in Vidhan Sabha too,” ANI quoted UP Congress chief and MLA Ajay Kumar Lallu as saying.

The Opposition has intensified its call for MoS Home’s resignation after the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Lakhimpur Kheri violence that led to the death of eight people termed it as “a pre-planned conspiracy”.

Local farmers had blamed Ajay Kumar Mishra ‘Teni’ and his son Ashish for the violence that claimed the lives of four farmers and a local journalist among others during a farmers’ protest.

They were allegedly mowed down by a vehicle that was part of the convoy of the minister in Lakhimpur Kheri. Videos were being circulated on social media, where a Mahindra Thar was seen knocking down protesters from behind.

Rahul Gandhi attacks Centre in Lok Sabha

Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP government at the Centre saying that the Opposition leaders are not being allowed to speak about the Lakhimpur Kheri case in the Parliament.

“We should be allowed to speak about the murder that was committed in Lakhimpur Kheri, where there was an involvement of the Minister and about which it has been said that it was a conspiracy. The Minister who killed farmers should resign and be punished,” he said in Lok Sabha.

On the other hand, Rajya Sabha has been adjourned till 2 pm following the Opposition’s protest in the House over the Lakhimpur violence and their demand for the immediate resignation of the MoS Home.
