Kunal Kamra Secures Transit Anticipatory Bail From Tamil Nadu Court

It came as a relief for Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra, who secured a transit anticipatory bail from a District Munsif-cum-Judicial Magistrate Court in Tamil Nadu’s Vanur. The Mumbai police already sent him three summons while asking him to appear before them after he mocked Maharashtra deputy CM Eknath Shinde during a stand-up performance on March 23 at Habitat Comedy Club in Mumbai’s Khar area.

Kamra approached the Madras High Court seeking transit anticipatory bail, claiming he has been receiving death threats. The high court gave him protection from arrest till April 7. Justice Sundar Mohan asked him to approach Vanur court in person to secure bail.  The Vanur court granted him relief.

Kamra takes a jibe at Fadnavis govt

On April 1,  Kamra took a satirical jibe at the Maharashtra government amid the ongoing controversy he finds himself in for his alleged disparaging remarks against the Maharashtra Deputy Minister Eknath Shinde.

In his latest post on X post, the stand-up artist shared a satirical ‘step-by-step guide’ on how to ‘kill’ an artist ‘democratically’, which appears to reflect on the aftermath of his controversial joke on Eknath Shinde.

Mumbai Police sends summon notices to audience

The artist refers to reports of Mumbai Police allegedly sending summon notices to the audience who visited his show ‘Naya Bharat’ for questioning.

The note read, “How to Kill an Artist: A Step-by-Step Guide… 1) Outrage just enough for brands to stop commissioning their work. 2) Outrage more- until private and corporate gigs dry up. 3) Outrage louder- so big venues won’t take the risk. 4) Outrage violently- until even the smallest spaces shut their doors. 5) Summon their audience for questioning-turning art into a crime scene.”

Kamra took a jibe at Mumbai Police

In his ‘X’ post, Kunal Kamra claimed that the Police was ‘going to an address’ where he has not lived for the past 10 years and this was a waste of time and ‘public resources’.

“Going to an address where I haven’t lived for the last 10 Years is a waste of your time & public resources…”, Kunal Kamra’s ‘X’ post read.

What is the case all about?

Kamra sparked a row with his “gaddar” (traitor) joke allegedly aimed at Eknath Shinde. Several political leaders condemned his remarks during a stand-up show and demanded action against him.
Following the controversy, Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena youth group, Yuva Sena, vandalised the Habitat comedy venue where the show was filmed. The comedian, who has had several run-ins with the BJP-led Centre, has refused to apologise for his remark against Shinde. However, he has said that he would cooperate with the police.
