Agitating Junior Doctors of West Bengal held a mass convention . This convention comes after five days of their withdrawal of hunger strike, fast-unto-death. The West Bengal Junior Doctors Front (WBJDF) declared that they will continue their protest and a rally to the CBI office will be organized on October 30. Through this rally, they demand justice for the victim of RG Kar Rape and Murder case. The junior doctors have been continuously protesting and holding talks with the state.

The six-hour-long mass convention was organised at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital by the WBJDF to discuss and strategise their next step to seek justice for the victim. Along with that, they want their demands to be fulfilled by the West Bengal government. After the mass convention, the doctors from various state-run medical establishments, representatives of civil society and celebrities from the Bengali entertainment industry took part in a ‘candle and fire torch’ rally.

What Did The Doctors Say?

Hindustan Times quoted Aniket Mahato, a protesting doctor who said that they still don’t know who real culprit is and it’s been more than two-and-a-half months. He further told that in the mass convention, they have decided to hold a rally to CBI office at CGO complex on 30 October.

The doctors also alleged that the truth has been suppressed and attempts are made to protect the real culprits behind the murder case.

Another doctor Kinjal Nanda said that they just don’t want the justice but also the cleansing of the system. “We wanted to know the truth and that is why we had pressed for a magisterial inquiry. There have been attempts to suppress the truth. We not only want justice but we also want to cleanse the system,” said Kinjal.

A delegation of doctors met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on October 21 and decided to call off their fast-unto-death strike. The decision came after their two-hour-long meeting with the CM. In their call off announcement, the junior doctors took back their decision of strike which was scheduled for Tuesday of that week. Despite their call off of the hunger strike, the doctors cleared that they would continue their movement over RG Kar Rape and Murder case.

Asfaqulla Naiya, a representative of junior doctors said, “We will continue our fight for justice as well as safety at medical colleges and hospitals.”
