Kavitha Kalvakuntla Launches ‘Janam Baata’ Yatra; Apologises to Telangana Martyrs and Their Families

After what Telangana Jagruthi president and MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha, described as a harrowing month after being ‘thrown out’ of Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS), she launched a four-month-long ‘Janam Baata’ yatra starting from October 24, 2025. “I am setting out on the ‘Janam Bata’ (Path of the People) campaign across 33 districts and 119 constituencies to work for the people. Please join — come forward and let us fight together,” she said.

During the launch at the Martyrs Memorial, Kavitha indicated whom she intends to target during her yatra. “Many people became martyrs in the Telangana movement. It is because of their sacrifices that we were able to achieve Telangana. But we must ask ourselves, have we truly fulfilled the ideals for which they gave their lives? We must also think about the current condition of the activists who fought relentlessly — those who struggled until their very last breath,” Kavitha said.

She further stated in front of the assembly that 1,200 people were martyred for Telangana and that the respect that should have been given to them, and their families, was been given. “Although the promise was to provide Rs 10 lakh and a government job to every martyr’s family, only 580 families have been supported — the rest have been denied justice. Among the activists, a few have had the opportunity to become MLAs, MPs, ZPTC and MPTC members, and Sarpanches, but thousands of others are still waiting for their rightful recognition and justice. Even today, many activists are continuing their struggle under the banner of the Telangana Activists’ Forum,” she said.

The former BRS leader also blamed herself, stating that she could not do much when the BRS was in power, as she was not a signing authority despite being an MP and MLC of the party. “During the ten years of the BRS government, although I did not serve as a minister, I continued to work as an MP and MLC. At that time, in internal party discussions, I had insisted that financial assistance should be extended to the families of the martyrs in one form or another. Still, I feel I could have fought even harder for you. So today, I fold my hands and sincerely apologize to the martyrs and their families,” she added.

Turning emotional, Kavitha announced, “The martyrs sacrificed their lives so that the people of Telangana could live with dignity and prosperity. I pledge to continue my fight until every martyr’s family receives ₹1 crore in compensation. I demand that this government immediately sanction ₹1 crore to each martyr’s family. And if this government fails to do so, I promise, before the feet of the martyrs, that I will ensure justice for them — even if it means changing the government itself. Let us prepare a complete list of all Telangana movement activists through a Praja Darbar (public consultation), so that no one is left out. I will continue this struggle without pause until every activist receives a pension.”

In a post on X, Kavitha wrote, “I apologise from the bottom of my heart to our Telangana martyrs and their families. Their brave sacrifices for our dreams haven’t been fully honored. It pains me deeply and I promise to fight tirelessly until each family gets justice. I am embarking on Janam Baata across 33 districts to build a truly social Telangana where every woman, farmer, youth and worker thrives with equality and dignity.
