Ahead of its release, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan’s upcoming film Laal Singh Chaddha has been making headlines for rather wrong reasons. The movie has been the centre of controversy for a few days now and a section of the internet has also called for a boycott. After Aamir’s
controversial “India’s growing intolerance” statement and Kareena’s reaction to ##BoycottLaalSinghChadha, it is the latter’s latest remark that has not gone down well with netizens.
For those unversed, Laal Singh Chaddha is a remake of Tom Hanks’ Forrest Gump. In a recent interview, Bebo dubbed the Hollywood movie an ‘elitist kind of classist film.’ And this apparently left netizens irked.
In the viral video from her interaction with News18, Kareena is heard saying, “No, because it’s an original adaptation in a different language. Our language and our sentiments and emotions are very different from theirs also. So, we’ve adapted it for our Indian screens, and I’m sure people would enjoy it. But there are still a lot of people who still haven’t seen Forrest Gump.”
“Because the masses would not have seen Forrest Gump. It is an elitist kind of classist film. It’s a film that the mass people they haven’t seen, so they will see it for a story. They aren’t gonna see it because it’s a remake of Forrest Gump. Of course, Aamir (Khan) has made it for that but it’s also a story that people would like to see,” she adds
The video has garnered quite some attention on the micro-blogging site and several users have slammed Kareena for her remark. A tweet read, “These people undermine the masses. OTT has brought ‘elitist’ movies to our homes. Time and curiosity is a combination any trash cannot beat.” Another user wrote, “Wait a minute !! Do i need to google the meaning?? Oh may be google also won’t be able to answer this.”
Criticisin the actress, a netizen commented, “Mrs Khan thinks India is just full of backward people who would watch Laal Singh Chadha because Forrest Gump was Elitist and Classist. What even? Do you have to sell brain to join Urduwood?” Here are a few reactions:
