The man behind such iconic cinema such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna is coming back to the director’s chair after a considerable hiatus.
The director had helmed the social drama My Name in Khan in 2010 and had followed it with the college romance, Student of the Year in 2012. Karan’s last directorial venture was the 2016 film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil in 2016, featuring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. The filmmaker has not directed any film since then.
KJo has just announced his next film on the occasion of Ranveer Singh’s birthday. The family drama will star Ranveer alongside Alia Bhatt is Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani. Ranveer took to Instagram to also announce the film and write, “A special announcement on my special day! Presenting – Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani along with my dazzling supernova Alia Bhatt, directed by the genre himself, kaleidoscopic visionary Karan Johar, & written by Ishita Moitra, Shashank Khaitan & Sumit Roy. Coming to charm you in 2022!”
Now after a hiatus of 5 years, Karan, on July 5, took to social media to announce that he is coming back with a new film. Taking to Twitter, Karan shared a clip showcasing his and Dharma Productions’ journey over the years, alongside a caption that read, “This is the beginning of a new journey & my way back home – all at once. It’s time to go back to my favourite place, it’s time to create some eternal love stories from behind the lens. A very special story, truly immersed in the roots of love and family.
Karan’s production house Dharma Productions too took to Twitter to share the news, alongside a caption that read, “HE is back! After 5 long years, @karanjohar is returning to the director’s chair. It’s time for some eternal love stories, ensemble casts, unforgettable tunes with his larger-than-life lens! Are you ready to feel those wholesome magical feelings, again?”
A few days back Karan Johar had taken to social media to announce that he is excited and honoured to be bringing the untold story of C Sankaran Nair to the big screen. According to a statement released by the filmmaker, the Karan Singh Tyagi directorial will unravel the courtroom battle that Sankaran Nair fought against the British Raj to uncover the truth about the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. The lead cast for the film is yet to be announced.
While KJo has not done any full length features, the last few years have seen him direct a segment each for two web anthologies – Lust Stories, Ghost Stories. He is also producing Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif’s Sooryavanshi as well as Ranbir Kapoor- Alia Bhatt’s Brahmastra.
